Also known as SIFE, Students In Free Enterprise, is an international student run non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. Participating students form teams on their university campuses and apply business concepts to develop outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for themselves, their communities, and their countries. Each year, a series of regional and national competitions provides a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. National champion teams advance to the prestigious SIFE World Cup.
SIFE has a network of more than 1,600 active universities in 39 countries and hundreds of the leading companies in the world. This network brings together the knowledge and expertise of professional educators and business executives to positively focus the energy and enthusiasm of more than 57,000 university students worldwide.
Currently, SIFE Western is in its second full year of operations and has a core executive team of 14 members. On March 12th this year, SIFE Western competed in the ACE Regional Competition in Toronto. We showcased two of our on-going projects in the TD SIFE Entrepreneurship category. One is Entrepreneurs in Action (EIA), a program focused on empowering youth in a high school based in St. Thomas, a low-income community, to help them discover entrepreneurship as a viable career path. The second program, BizInc, is an entrepreneurial incubation centre that empowers students studying at Western University and Fanshawe College to start and run their very own enterprises. With the results of 2 cities impacted, 8 businesses started, 24 new jobs created, and $64,500 of economic growth, we are very pleased to announce that we placed Second Runner Up in our league. This means, we will be competing at the ACE National Exposition in Calgary in May 7th – 9th in the open round competition. This category showcases all the projects from entrepreneurship to financial literacy to the green projects all together. At Nationals, teams from across Canada will be presenting their results from as far as Victoria, BC to Newfoundland. We hope to be able to place in our league and advanced to the semi-finals.
SIFE Western is constantly recruiting students who are passionate about helping those help themselves. If you are interested, please feel free to send me an email at Hilary.firstname.lastname@example.org, we are more than welcome to have you to be a part of our team, our family.
